Digital Magazine Website Design

March 16, 2018 by Michaela Lozada

(Adobe Photoshop)

I am a part of the Rutgers Honors College Media Team; specifically, I am a member of the Graphic Design and Photography teams. This year, the Media Team is working on creating a brand-new online literary magazine showcasing the artistic side of the lives of Honors College students. I was chosen to design and create the banner for the website that would host the magazine, which we decided to name “Peek.”
This is the design I eventually came up with. I created a graphic of the Honors College building itself, as well as the Honors College mug. Swirls of steam rising up from the mug (inspired by Japanese brushwork) surround the building. I also created two versions of the design – one programmed to appear during the night (top half) and one for the day (bottom half).
This design is a play on several aspects of the Honors College’s reputation: (1) that we are a collection of many diverse disciplines and majors (steam vs. STEAM), and (2) that we are hard workers, found with a coffee mug in hand at any given time of day. The magazine is scheduled to be released soon. I am very excited to be able to share with you this small “peek” into what it will be!

Artist Statement

My art has always acted as a microphone for my thoughts and observations; through it, I make my voice heard. Through wide-ranging media, such as charcoal portraiture, 2-D and 3-D animation, and oil painting, I create statements on equally widespread themes, from the nobilities of simple living to issues of global concern.

Whenever possible, I use my computer science background to integrate elements of programming and the digital world into my art, making for a very unique portfolio!

Media

I choose media carefully to best complement this process. Charcoals and graphite are used to capture the most fleeting subject material, using quick, sparing strokes to reflect bodies in motion and draw out the evanescence of the image as a whole. For the opposite effect, I often elect to use paints (usually oils) to create a work with multiple depths. Glazes layered carefully on thicker mixes of paint are used to capture the nuances of the personalities I choose to convey. I always try to adapt my knowledge of computer science to my art, mixing traditional art with digital and combining seemingly opposing media.
