(8.5″ x 11″, Graphite and Colored Pencil)
This is a preliminary study for the “Mama” portrait (also included in my portfolio). The objective of this portrait was to study the colors present in my mother’s face, an extremely important step to the process behind the actual painting. I focused on correctly portraying the colors and lighting of the moment.
Through this preparatory portrait, I was able to make note not only of the expected reds, tans, and browns, but I also discovered interesting greens and blues (mainly reflected light from her hair and clothing). The eventual painting would break down these colors extensively, making it very important to understand the initial colors present.
